September 9th
We have started introducing and reviewing the letters of the alphabet. This week we met a new classroom mascot named, Mabel (she's an elephant). She will be learning right along side of us this year and the kids were super excited to meet her!
Phonics
This we started our first unit called Making Friends with Letters. We will be spending a good portion of our time in this unit learning to study, recognize and read each others names and the letters in our names. The kids are doing an excellent job of recognizing their own names in print, now they are ready to start recognizing their classmate's names, too. We learned that when learning a friends name their our things we can do to learn them faster...
We are making a predictable chart of each of our names as they are introduced throughout the alphabet.
We also learned their are things we can do with letters to help us really know them and become experts with identifying them...
We spent time learning about letters Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd this week. We will focus on a letter a day. The kids are working on being letter detectives in their Highlighting Books, making their very own Alphabet Book and making a special animal project to help remember these letters at home, too. If your child misses one of our letter days, I will send the project home with him/her to do. These animal projects should be kept at home. You may want to display them in your child's room!
Math
We have started to learn all about our Number Corner this week. These are routines that we do daily to build number sense and computational fluency. Our Number Corner will continue to evolve and grow throughout the year. Currently we are predicting patterns using shape recognition and the dates on the calendar, becoming familiar with the numbers 1-9 on a number line, keeping track of how many days we've been in school and creating a counting collection (this month we are collecting unifix cubes).
Our math mini lessons have involved identifying different attributes of our shoes and making comparisons to determine similarities and differences. Some of the attributes we discovered were, color, straps, velcro, loops, laces and type of shoe. We then created shoe graphs and even a human graph of all of our shoes!
