September 16th
Our class is still in the lead for our Mustangs on the Move Fundraiser! Our school wide goal has not yet been achieved...lets keep bringing in those pledges so the kids can turn Mrs. Burnett into a human sundae!!! All packets and pledges are due back by Wednesday, Sept.21. Please send them back in your child's folder. Thank you for your support!
Red Barn Field Trip
Monday, Oct. 3rd our class will be walking to the Red Barn for some fall fun and learning!
We will arrive there at 9:30 and leave at 10:30am. Parents are welcome to attend either by walking with us, or meeting us there. The cost is $6 which covers the cost of our apple and pumpkin learning activities, story, cider and donuts, picking pumpkins and visiting the animals. Please send in your child's $6 (cash only please) in an envelope labeled with "Red Barn" by Friday, Sept. 30th.
Parents wishing to attend and have donuts and cider/pick a pumpkin, will need to pay inside the market upon your arrival to the Red Barn.
Phonics
We continued to spend time learning to recognize, read and write our friends names. This week we spent time also becoming experts with the letters in our own names. This process will continue until we can teach others all about how to read and write our name. When your child is writing their name at home there are a couple things to watch for...1. Are they holding their writing tool correctly with the pincer grasp? Here's a look at the correct form...
2. Are they resting their hand and forearm on the table? From fingers to elbow, their arm should be supported on the writing surface. This gives them the most support. Another trick is to have your child write while laying on their bellies and propped up on their elbows.
3. Is your child forming the letters correctly? They should be starting at the top of the letter and have the first letter ONLY being a capital letter. The rest should be written as lowercase letters.
Keeping an eye on these things at home will help support what they are learning and practicing at school.
We spent time learning about letters Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh and Ii this week. We focus on a letter a day. The kids are working on being letter detectives in their Highlighting Books, making their very own Alphabet Book and making a special animal project to help remember these letters at home, too. If your child misses one of our letter days, I will send the project home with him/her to do. These animal projects should be kept at home. You may want to display them in your child's room!
Math
This week we have been working with the five frame. The kids are getting very good at quickly recognizing dot patterns on the five frame (subitizing) and representing them with fingers and cubes. They are also realizing that some of the boxes are empty. Together the dots and empty boxes make combinations of five. Thank you for helping your child to complete and return their Home Connects. They are meant to be a quick activity that helps reinforce our lessons from the unit. Next week we move onto the 10 frame.
Reminders
* Send a snack daily. Be sure it is separate from their lunches and easy to find.
