Reading/Phonics
This week we learned the letters Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh and Ii. We compared names of students, studying the letters carefully, to tell how they are the same and how they are different. We also learned there are two types of letters: vowels and consonants. The children discovered that Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo and Uu are the vowels and the rest are consonants. After reading words in our room, they also discovered that Yy can pretend to be a vowel sometimes, too. They learned that all words have vowels and most have consonants. The class has been very eager to hunt for vowels!
We started Reader's Workshop this week, and the class discovered that they are already able to read words/signs in our environment. They can LOOK, THINK and READ!
Math
We started a number book this week focusing in on the numbers from 1-10. For many, this is a review and helps to make these numbers/quantities more concrete, but for others, these are all new symbols they must learn. If your child is just starting their adventures with numbers, be sure to point out them around your home. Having your child help set the table at home is a great way for them to practice counting. Tell them how many forks, spoons, napkins, etc. they will.
Reminders
