September 10

 September 10th

This was a unique week with an unexpected power outage in the middle of our morning.  Never a dull moment in kindergarten and out here in the country!  Thank you all for making special arrangements to pick up your kids early.

Reading/Phonics

This week we jumped into the alphabet.  For some of the kids this is a review and they move quickly through our activities and on to more challenges, however for many, this is their first experience learning the letters and the sounds they represent.  What an exciting time!  They are making the first steps towards becoming a reader and a writer!

This week we focused on the first 4 letters of the alphabet Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd.  As we learn these new letters we are also being introduced to names of friends in our classroom that begin with those letter sounds.  For instance, yesterday, we were introduced to letter Cc.  Cora, Corbin and Charlotte all begin with C.  The kids did some observations of their friends name and discovered that Cora's name was shorter and Charlotte has nine letters in her name.  They also noticed that Cora and Corbin both make the hard /c/ sound, but Charlotte's name makes a /sh/ sound.  Your kindergartners are very observant!
By the end of our unit, the kids will be able to recognize and read not only their name, but the names of their classmates as well.

We also were introduced to our new friend, Mabel, the elephant!  The kids were so excited to meet her and she is looking forward to learning all about letters and words, right along with our class.

Math

We did some preliminary counting and number recognition with each child this week, to determine who might benefit from some extra practice and game time with our favorite "Number Lady", Ms. Tawney.

This week we got to know our classmates further by playing a measuring game.  The kids were each given a strip of paper and they had to find the person who had the same length of paper as theirs.

We also are learning to "count around the circle".  They have to listen and say the next number as we say the number sequence.  Our goal by then end of the first trimester is to count to 35 and to 100 by the end of the year.  This is an easy skill to practice at home or on the go.  Many kindergartens mix up the the teen numbers when counting (or skip some all together...i.e.  11, 12, 13, 16, 18).  Lots of practice is needed to master those tricky teens!!
