September 6th
We continue working our way through the alphabet with a letter a day! We are learning to recognize the letter, name it and tell the sound. We are also learning a movement or action with each letter sound. This helps build a path in the brain to remembering each individual sound and letter.
In our phonics skill lessons we have been learning to listen carefully and count the number of sounds we here in our environment and now we have transitioned into counting the words we hear in short sentences and phrases. We also are listening to rhyming word pairs and listening for first sounds in a word.
As readers, we are learning about Nursery Rhymes. We have learned new vocabulary words like: fetch, crown, tuffet, curds and whey. We also have learned to identify the main character and the main event of each rhyme.
As writers, we are learning to make vertical, horizontal, slanted and curved lines. Becoming more proficient at these will helps when we start learning the correct formation of letters and numbers.
In math we are focusing on a number of the day, learning to count it in a variety of ways and write it by learning some silly poems. We will build a strong foundation of 0-10 so we can start adding and subtracting with those quantities.
Our baseline Acadience assessments have been completed in both pre-reading and math skills. Students scoring in the below benchmark (yellow) or well below benchmark (red) on their total composite score, will begin receiving some extra small group time on those skills to give them a little boost in their learning. I will send home their reports next week Friday. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Remember, these are just baseline assessments. Lots of learning is ahead of us. Our kindergartners come in with a variety of prior learning experiences. We are ready to meet their needs at all levels of learning.
