August 29th

 August 29th

This week we started our 26 days of letters!  We are making a project with each letter to practice fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.  The kindergartners are using scissors to cut on straight, curved and zig-zagged lines.  This tends to be a skill that many of kids are lacking.  These projects help us to build routines and to follow multi-step directions, as well.  It is so important that you allow time at home for your child to develop these skills.  Let them cut up old papers, trace lines and curves, play with Play-doh and draw in the sand.  All these things help to develop that hand eye coordination and strengthen the muscles in their hands.  All these skills need to be practiced over and over in order to make them strong writers in the future.

This week  we started some preliminary letter/sound assessments.  I will be sharing them with you when they have been completed.  As a kindergarten staff we will look at where all the students skill levels are currently at and make decisions about which students would benefit most from some added small group work in those pre-reading skills.
