March 1st

March 1st

It's March's Reading Month!

Please check your folder for all the information about reading hours for at home reading!  Kindergartners can earn time by enjoying books on their own, or with a family member reading to them.  For every hour they read each week, they will get their name added to our school drawing for some fun prizes!  Join the fun and practice your reading!

Phonics/Reading

This week we learned about letter Rr and it's sound /r/ and the letter Ll and it's sounds /l/.  We also learned that both of these letters can show up as the second letter in a word and blend in with the first sound (/br/, /cr/  /dr/, /sl/, cl/, /pl/, etc.)  When we segment these sounds to decode or write them we say each sound on it's own. When we read them, however, we want to blend and flow the two sounds together.  The /r/ and /l/ sounds, especially in blends are tricky for 5 and 6 year old's to pronounce and hear.  We will continue to practice segmenting and blending these sounds in words.

Here are some words to practice reading and writing at home:
flat  slip   slug   left   brag   drop

Can your child read these sentence?

I got a lot of lids.
I see the frog.
Get the drum from me.
