November 5th
We had a wonderful week of learning! Your kids are sponges soaking it all up.
We had our first snowfall here at MLE and I have a tradition that we drop whatever we are doing and run out to catch the first snowflakes of the year on our tongues. It only got them a LITTLE wound up! :) We also purposely don't wear our coats as a reminder that when the snow starts to fly, it's time to always remember to put on our coats at recess time. BRRR!!
Grand Rapids Public Museum Field Trip
Mark your calendars for Monday, November 15th. We will be going to the Grand Rapids Public Museum. It's always nice to have lots of parents at this trip. We will arrive at the museum at 9:45am and will leave the museum at 1:00pm. Our Family Links is covering the cost of admission for all our students and Consumers Energy is paying for our bussing! We are all set on lead volunteers. Thank you!
If you did not get a LEAD volunteer spot, we still would LOVE to have you join us! Please send me an email if you plan to attend our trip. You will meet us at the museum at 9:45am. You will need to pay the general admission fee at the door and for the planetarium show. We are attending the 10:00-10:45am show, "One World, One Sky".
Mrs. Khodl, our substitute, will be attending the field trip with our class that day as I am taking my daughter on a college visit.

Reading/Phonics
We have become Word Scientists! Just as scientists study rocks and oceans and creatures that live in our world, WORD scientists study words and the alphabet chart. Here are some of the things the class noticed while looking closely at the alphabet chart:
"The W's look a like." "So do the O's." "There's a dog in the Dd box and dog starts with Dd." "Xx has a fox...that doesn't start with the Xx sound." "Every box has a picture that starts with the letter sound, except for X. The X sound comes at the end of the word."
As the week went on we used our new SNAP words to label things we found interesting on our alphabet chart. The class discovered that the words (see, look, at) will be used a lot in our writing.
During Reader's Workshop we finished up our first unit focusing on Learn About the World Books (nonfiction) and our Old Time Favorites. Next week we start learning about our "Super Reading Powers"!
We learned that we can now look, find and READ some of the exact words in our books. How exciting for our new readers!
Unit #1 Words:
a me the I like my
Unit #2 Words:
see at look
Math
We are learning to show numbers in a variety of ways...numerals, with cubes, on a dice, with tally marks and we even learned that a penny is one cent and a nickel represents five cents.
Check out how we worked in groups to create shapes with yarn. It wasn't as easy at they thought it would be. This took lots of communication and cooperation!
We also made Hexagon people to help us remember this new shape!
Reminders
* Send a snack daily several have been forgetting.
* Send a water bottle daily...our drinking fountain is now working, too!
* Wash towels over the weekend and return them on Monday
* Return library books every Monday
Take a Peek at our Week...
We are learning to make settings with at least five details when we write stories and to label important things we include in our pictures.
We used our Chromebooks to work on IXL. This week we listened to short stories and choose the best picture that matched the setting and main character.
Literacy Stations
Labeling our alphabet charts
We found EXACT words in our Old Time Favorites!
Shape Sorting...we sorted by size, shape, color and thickness
We discovered many ways to make hexagons with our pattern blocks.
Have a great weekend!! I am headed to MIS tomorrow to cheer on Elijah's two sisters and our LHS Boys Cross Country team as they compete at the D1 State Championship! Go Red Arrows!!
